What is PBIS?

PBIS is an approach we use to establish the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students to achieve social, emotional, and academic success. PBIS applies a three-tiered system of support and a problem-solving process to enhance the capacity of the Euclid Schools to effectively educate all students. 

The goals of PBIS are to:

• Increase data-based decision-making on behavior and reinforce across all settings.

• Reduce the use of reactive discipline measures in schools (e.g., office discipline referrals, detentions, suspensions, and expulsions) for all students.

• Increase student academic achievement.

• Implement effective intervention plans for students with behavioral and emotional needs.

School-wide PBIS emphasizes four integrated elements: (a) data for decision-making, (b) measurable outcomes supported and evaluated by data, (c) practices with evidence that these outcomes are achievable, and (d) systems that efficiently and effectively support the implementation of these practices. 

Schools that establish systems with the capacity to implement school-wide PBIS with integrity and durability have teaching and learning environments that are:

• Less reactive, aversive, dangerous and exclusionary, and

• More engaging, responsive, preventive, and productive.

PBIS in Euclid City Schools District

The Euclid City School District has been implementing Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports for several years. Each school has a chosen set of behavioral expectations, which are clearly defined for classrooms and the common areas of the school building. The expectations are systematically taught and demonstrated through behavior lesson plans, on a schedule developed by the Tier I Team. The schedule is largely dependent upon school data that suggests which potential or problem behaviors need to be addressed as priorities.

Each school has a system for acknowledging positive student behavior. Rewards may be individualized or classroom-based and can vary from school to school. Euclid High School has a student advisory group to help identify rewards most valued by students.

When problem behavior does occur, errors are corrected proactively and teachers are encouraged to utilize restorative practices whenever possible. Each building has a behavior management flow chart, which is used to help teachers distinguish major from minor behavioral incidents, as well as determine if a behavior is managed within the classroom or referred to administration.

State Recognition for Euclid Schools’ PBIS Implementation

Every school within the Euclid City School District has been recognized by the Ohio Department of Education for its PBIS implementation PBIS for the 2018 - 2019 school year. Recognition levels are as follows:

Early Learning Village - Bronze

Arbor Elementary - Silver

Bluestone Elementary - Silver

Chardon Hills STEM Elementary - Silver

Shoreview Elementary - Silver

Euclid Middle School - Bronze

Euclid High School - Bronze

In addition, the Euclid City School District is a recipient of the Ohio District Recognition Award for 2019.

How can Parents be Involved?

Parent support is important for the successful implementation of PBIS. Each building has a PBIS team, which includes one or more parent representative(s). Parents are also encouraged to assist with PBIS events and fundraising. Learn how to become involved in your child’s school by contacting the building principal.
